RESUMEN
La lepra, enfermedad milenaria, es una patología infecciosa causada por el M. leprae que afecta principalmente a la piel y al sistema nervioso periférico. A pesar de tener un tratamiento eficaz y no excesivamente caro, sin un diagnóstico precoz y un tratamiento adecuado, esta enfermedad dejará una serie de secuelas que van a alterar de por vida el día a día del paciente. Por lo general, el diagnóstico basado en parámetros clínicos y laboratoriales resulta fácil y barato, siendo en muchos países el personal sanitario paramédico el que realiza un muy importante trabajo de control de esta enfermedad. En el siguiente artículo de revisión, los autores intentan describir los conceptos básicos que cualquier trabajador sanitario deberá conocer para el diagnóstico, tratamiento y manejo de esta enfermedad.
ABSTRACT
Leprosy is an ancient and infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae that affects mainly the skin and the peripheral nervous system. Although there is an effective and economical drug treatment for the disease, without an early diagnosis and implementation of treatment the disease will cause impairments that alter and affect the patient´s daily life. Normally, the diagnosis of leprosy based on clinical and laboratory findings is relatively simple and is performed by health workers in many countries. In this paper, the authors review and describe the basic and essential concepts necessary for any health worker to make a correct diagnosis and implement a proper treatment and control of the patient.
